“YOU HAVE TO KEEP BREAKING YOUR HEART UNTIL IT OPENS.”

Hi. I’m Roy. I’m glad you found your way here.

MEET ROY

I am a therapist, human service consultant and author living in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

For 30 years I’ve had the privilege of helping people encountering death, grief and trauma. I have learned so much from the suffering, dying and grieving people I’ve cared for, and am deeply blessed to have the opportunity to bring their wisdom and experience to my daily work. I carry that sacred medicine with honour.

Whether providing consulting services to healthcare teams facing compassion fatigue, delivering webinars to business organizations or counselling someone suffering with mental or spiritual anguish, I endeavour to bring academic rigour, compassion, clarity, and authenticity to each of my human encounters.

I have extensive experience caring for people and organizations in both managed care and community-based environments.

GET HELP

I believe that growth and change are natural, inevitable, and inborn. Just as the cells in our body heal and restore themselves, so does the soul. We are hard-wired for healing.

Therapy is fundamentally a relationship. The healing and the help to be gained in therapy occurs because of the therapeutic relationship. When mutual trust, honesty, and stability are developed and nurtured, really great things can happen. I bring a host of therapeutic skills to the table to help you grow and enjoy being you once again.

Groups create safe nests for support and sharing. Groups heal us by creating belonging, that shared sense of being welcomed and cared for by people who understand. I remind all my group participants that it isn’t the talking, but rather the being listened to that begins to open us up inside.

Grief retreats give you a chance to make room for reflection; to drop the day-to-day concerns, to back away from the regular stressors and routines and find a place to slow down and tune into our lives. The retreat also allows for downtime, play, and unscheduled free time for rest, sleep, walking, talking, or reflection.

I present webinars and workshops to organizations and groups seeking education and skills on topic areas such as grief, trauma, resilience, compassion fatigue, anxiety, and mental health.

SPEAKING & CONSULTING

Speaking and teaching are my lifelong passions. I’m a vibrant communicator who combines a researcher’s interest in accuracy with the wit and colour of a natural storyteller. Because I enjoy people, I excel at living conversations with my participants, and prioritize dialogue and discussion over the purely didactic.

“For safekeeping, gold is hidden in a desolate place, where no one ever goes, not in a familiar, easy-to-get-to spot. The proverb goes, Joy lives concealed in grief.”

— Rumi, The Threat of Death
